They've had enough, and decided to do something about it.
(not one of the elephants in question, but is that an imitation G Wagon?)
There was an accident last week involving a train and an elephant near the village of Matari in eastern India. While this is saddening, it is also apparently not an uncommon occurrence.
(I had a sad when I GIS'd "elephant train".)
The elephants, being highly social animals, have remained in the area in a show of mourning for their fallen herd member. This a normal reaction when an incident like this occurs.
The disturbing thing, they know who did it. The elephants have begun attacking surrounding villages, and singling out humans for revenge/justice.
Some !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has the story.
disclaimer: this could also be some nefarious plot by by a bunch of hippies trying to convince us that it's time to bow to our new elephant overlords. *shrug*

Train lines run through elephant habitats and unfortunately trains do hit elephants causing death. Also, due to expanding human settling, elephant habitats are shrinking and their natural ranging areas are being split (by highways, roads and the like). Thus imagine a huge area in which these elephants graze and range and that is now split by a highway or something. That is when human/elephant interactions increase and commotion results. Its not new. But its sad. I think the supreme court recently banned building new roads and travel at night through sensitive areas. Hope it helps though. There are always assholes who benefit by not allowing animal/forest conservation. That elephant in the picture has a dart in its side and it appears to be in Maharashtra.
